Oh. Just missed the cut for this stacked lineup). Not pictured: Court 2 winner Rob Main. In a match we can only assume was played with full hazmat suits and hypoallergenic balls (these jokes are becoming less and less humorous by the minute of course), Radley Run 1 defeated Overbrook 1 3-1 in Courts to earn the right to stay in D1 next year this Thursday night past. As many of you know, the third place D2 team (Overbrook this year) doesn't get to auto-jump up and displace the 10th place D1 team (Radley this year) as happens in other Divisions. The All-Wise and Seeing D1 Gods have decreed that a team must undergo another quest before getting to breath that exclusive air. The Steven Hall-less Overbrook squad (9-7 this year) put up a good fight in an attempt to move back up to D1 for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign. Radley earned the right to stay up for it's third year in a row. Court 1: OVERBROOK (favored by 1 rating point) The duo of Tom Burt (who is apparently trying to win every club championship in the Delaware Valley) and Oliver Jones edged out a determined Doug Raihall and Lonnie Cooper team in a three-set battle that included a tie-breaker Court 2: RADLEY (a whopping 25 point favorite) Top-rated Radley Ace Jaleel Kahn guided his partner Robert Main to a dominating three-set sweep ober Jay O'donovan and John Phelan, exposing Overbrooks big drop of in strength after Court 1. Court 3: RADLEY (11 point favorites) Chris Avayou and Marcus Fischer cruised in the first two sets before giving up the third set to Danny Albornoz and Travis Uyeno, all but clinching the win for Radley. Court 4: RADLEY 8 point favorites) Bob Collins and John Goodridge closed out the night with the most competitive match of the night, winning 6-7, 6-3, 7-6. Their opponents (Keenan Goggin and Tim Morris finished a strong season in which they each improved their ratings by a few points - they'll be tough next year. Full Story D4 Kennett Survives Tight Double Jump Challenge from D5 Huntingdon Valley to move up to D3 Thursday evening brought perfect paddle weather – upper 30s temperatures, little wind and dry weather as undefeated D5 Champions Huntingdon Valley 2 (16-0) travelled to Mushroom Country to battle 3rd Place D4 squad Kennett (12-4) to see who moved up to D3 and who would be in D4 next year. Kennett offered a great atmosphere – Firepits, comfy chairs, some great craft beers on tap, and a couple dozen spectators – including the legendary gaggle (that’s the correct term – I looked it up) of always fun Kennett Men’s paddle groupies cheering loudly. Few clubs have such die-hard paddle cultures that they are able to get women beyond their wives out to watch them, so kudos to the Kennett boys for the great program they, under the tutelage of paddle legends like Andy Pogonyi, Ken Goddu, Tony Devitto, Doug Mainwaring and Neal Land (all there watching despite not being on the courts) have built. HV pro Robbie Rowe escorted his crew down and was there to try to balance out the support. Yes, Kennett won 2.5 courts to 1 (Court 2 shook hands and walked off as soon as Kennett had won the required two courts to clinch the match) for the right to elevate to D3. It was a tight match with every court but one coming down to the 3rd set, and a few “7s” showing up on the scorecard. But that’s not the lede. The lede is how great it is that the league has more than doubled in size in the last 10 years, to now number 112 squads, over 1,100 players, leading to dozens of nights like last night this season. Great league, great season, continues to be great sport. Anyway, on to the match. Kennett 2 came in hungry to move back up to D3 after being relegated last year. Prior to that, Kennett 2 had lounged in plush D3 for about 5 years, with a long tenure of about 5 years before that in D2. It can be tough to manage excellence like that with a D2 squad above you picking off your best players all year. Huntingdon Valley 2 came in equally primed – They’ve spent the last two years in D5 after having bee...
